Antique Meiji Kinkozan Satsuma Teapot & Cup Set, Japanese Awata Ware Ceramic
$ 91.62
What an absolutely stunning find! This is a gorgeous antique Japanese teapot and matching cup set from the renowned Kinkozan family, dating all the way back to the Meiji period (1868-1912). It’s a truly special piece of history, perfect for anyone who appreciates unique, handcrafted ceramics. Features: This beautiful set is a classic example of Kyo-Satsuma ware from the Awata district, famously produced by the Kinkozan workshop for the export market. The entire surface is covered in a delicate, cream-coloured crackle glaze (crazing), which gives it so much character. It has been meticulously hand-painted with raised enamel designs featuring colourful flowers, butterflies, and birds. The teapot lid is topped with the most charming turtle finial (a symbol of longevity in Japanese culture!), and the set is completed with a traditional wicker-wrapped handle. The cup features a wonderful green bamboo-shaped handle. The artist’s signature is also present on the side of the teapot. Measurements (Approximate): Teapot: Height (with handle): 12.5cm (4.9 inches) Width (spout to side): 14.5cm (5.7 inches) Cup: Height: 6.5cm (2.6 inches) Diameter: 6.5cm (2.6 inches) Condition: Presented in good antique condition. It features a beautiful, intentional all-over crackle glaze (crazing) which is characteristic of this style. To be completely transparent, there are a few small, historic chips to the inner rim of the teapot and some minor discolouration consistent with its considerable age and use. It has been priced with this in mind. It remains a stunning and solid piece for display. Styling Ideas: A truly beautiful statement piece for a curated display cabinet or “shelfie”. Perfect for adding a touch of historic Japonisme or Chinoiserie elegance to your home décor. Makes a stunning decorative object for a maximalist living room or a quiet corner in a study, adding a layer of history and artistry.
