I’m primarily a cigar smoker, but also enjoy a pipe from time to time. The first serious smoker I ever knew was a pipe smoker–my uncle, whom I thought was 100 years old when I was little (he was actually in his 60s). He had a ‘study’–no such thing as a ‘man cave’ for this gentleman–filled with books, maps, a globe, a big leather chair and a ton of pipe and pipe racks. I don’t have a clue what kind of pipe he smoked or what tobacco he enjoyed. I was just fascinated with all of the intricate pipes and accessories and loved the way the office smelled. Even as a little kid, I realized that this is how a true gentleman, a man of sophisticated tastes, comports himself.I have to think that the experience with my uncle planted the seed for my future love of cigars and pipes. It definitely influenced my love for well crafted pipe accessories. I ordered another pipe rack from Scotte last week and was blown away by the beautiful wood and the rugged functionality of the stand. I was so impressed with the quality I immediately ordered another Scotte pipe stand. This one holds only two pipes but also has a tobacco storage can with a hydrometer and humidifier. I don’t have a problem with keeping tobacco moist in the humid southeast, but I spend part of the year in a much dryer climate and this will come in handy. There’s also a slot at the front for storage of the various ephemera involved with pipe smoking–lighters, tampers, etc.Like the previous stand I ordered, this one is also made from Merbau, a hardwood known for it’s durability and good looks. It’s a popular wood for home renovation, particularly for decks. It has many of the same properties as teak. It’s also great for pipe stands. The wood is gorgeous, with a highly polished shine. The metal detailing is copper–and they didn’t skimp here at all. No surprise that this also feels very heavy and substantial.Ultimately, it’s ‘deja vu all over again’ with another excellent product from Scotte. I can’t say enough good things about this pipe stand. It’s the perfect combination of form and function. It looks like something you’d see in a bar at a five star hotel. I also like to think it’s the kind of pipe stand my uncle would have were he alive today. Just amazing quality at a value price point.
